As quoted by Evening Standard, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has expressed his surprise at the club’s spending spree in the last two transfer windows.
The Brazil international has admitted that he has never seen anything like this while watching the Blues spend over £600m in the last two windows.
After a chaotic summer, Chelsea signed eight new players in the January window. They spent big money on players, including £88.5m for Mykhailo Mudryk and breaking the British transfer record for Enzo Fernandez.
Here’s what Silva said regarding this while praising the club’s ambition to succeed (h/t Evening Standard):
“It’s the first time I’ve seen something like this in my whole career. This shows about the ambition of the club, how much the club wants to win. We had a lot of injury problems this year. A lot of new players arrived and that takes time to prepare and get used to.
“We know we’re not having the best season, but I really believe that the positive thing is if we don’t start well, we can finish well.”
Although Silva may not have seen spending of this type before, he certainly was employed by a club in the shape of Paris-Saint Germain, which was not short of money. Many believe it is their inflated spending on buying Neymar Jr. from Barcelona that started the market to bubble up in the game.
The 38-year-old is out of contract at Chelsea in the summer (Transfermarkt). But, the latest reports say that he is close to signing a one-year extension, taking his stay at the club until 2024. A few days ago, he himself talked about how the team needs him to stay.
Even at such an age, Silva is one of the best defenders in the league. His performance levels do not seem to drop one bit. In the last three games, he has formed a solid partnership with Benoit Badiashile. As a result, Chelsea are yet to concede when that partnership started together.
To match with the good ambition shown by the club, the team must respond with a great second half of this season. Silva’s leadership and experience will be key to whatever good we do till May.
