Mason Mount’s future at Chelsea appears questionable as the club and midfielder have been unable to come to an amicable agreement on a contract extension.
According to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph (subscription needed), (h/t Daily.Mail), club executives are accepting Mount’s decision not to have his contract extended.
Mount and the Blues have been unable to reach an agreement on a new deal because the club is reluctant to match the midfielder’s exorbitant salaries. The 24-year-old only has 18 months left at Stamford Bridge and may start looking for a new club if his pay isn’t improved, (Transfermarkt).
The England international turned down Chelsea’s most recent offer because he believed he deserved a raise, as new signings are earning more than him.
The player is thought to have declined the latest offer because he wants to triple his £80,000 weekly salary, which has halted his contract talks. And this might make it necessary for the club to decide on his future. And a lot of teams are already interested in signing the 24-year-old, with possible suitors like Juventus and Liverpool emerging.
Given his important to the club in recent seasons dating back to Frank Lampard’s time, it is safe to say he is a part of our project. The midfielder has played 189 times for Chelsea since making the first squad and has scored 33 goals for the team since graduating from the academy. And has continued to perform well, winning the club’s player of the year award each of the past two years.
The relationship between a team and a player can occasionally be impacted by salary, and Mount hasn’t fared consistently this season.
However, this season he hasn’t been able to put on a convincing performance, which doesn’t mean we should contemplate selling him. He is one of our essential players, so we need to decide on his future calmly.
And if we do sell him, it would leave us with just one attacking midfielder, Kai Havertz. More than that, it would be losing one of our very own – a player that may not be flying right now but is elite when at his best and has what it takes to be a world-beater.
Our priority should be to keep him. Replacing a player of his talent and age profile will not be cheap. Seeing him join a direct Premier League rival would be another nightmare.
