According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea boss Graham Potter had an emergency meeting with the club staff to discuss the issues that are hindering the team from winning games of football.
Talks were held at the Cobham training ground and it was labelled as a “strategy meeting” with discussion among the operation team at Chelsea on how to change the course of the season.
Potter gave the players two days off after the defeat to Southampton on Saturday. He and his staff are united in their quest to make things right.
The pressure is on the manager after a run of two wins in 14 league games. However, as per the Telegraph, the ownership group of Chelsea are not willing to change their minds yet.
They think that Potter was hired in a difficult situation after the season began. Hence, he needs at least one full pre-season with the squad before the results are to be judged.
While those are commendable thoughts and it shows their willingness to stick by their decision, it is becoming too difficult to see how can the manager turn things around with so much of this season still to go.
Getting top-four in the league looks like a great ask after being 11 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with less than half of the games left. On the other hand, they are trailing in the last-16 tie of the Champions League to Borussia Dortmund as well. The chance to turn that around will arrive on March 7th at Stamford Bridge.
If that turnaround doesn’t happen and the results in the league stay the same, will the owners just write this season off to give Potter the pre-season he deserves? From what we have read, it seems like this is going to be the case.
It is up to the manager and his staff to do some good work and justify the faith shown in them by the people above.
