A View From The Bridge

“I have not spoken to them”: Highly-rated Chelsea loanee not in constant contact with the Blues

Callum Hudson-Odoi on how Bundesliga is different and having less contact with Chelsea

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, on loan Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi spoke about how Bundesliga is different to the Premier League and him having less contact with the Blues.

The Chelsea winger is currently on loan with German side Bayer Leverkusen for the length of this season, having made the move late on in the summer window.

He has had a mixed campaign so far, with a few decent performances but not being able to convert them into goals and assists. Hence the returns of one goal and one assist in 20 appearances in all competitions.

Here’s what the 22-year-old said about the Bundesliga, his contact with Chelsea and more (h/t Sky Sports):

“One second you can be defending and then all of a sudden you are through on goal. It is so quick [in Bundesliga]. It is more of a counter-attacking way of playing compared to in England, where it is more defensive and about compactness and playing through to get through to goal.

“I have not spoken to them [Chelsea] much recently at all. I am not there so seeing all these players going, there is nothing I can say or do. At the end of the day, I am focused on the club here and trying to help as much as possible here. Whatever happens in the future, I do not know. All I can do is focus on what happens here.”

Hudson-Odoi’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). So, when he comes back from his loan spell in the summer, Chelsea will have a decision to make regarding his future.

A few weeks ago, The Athletic (subscription required) revealed that several clubs around Europe are circling a possible move for the winger. They know he could be available for a bargain fee in the summer if Chelsea do not extend his contract.

Among the clubs keeping track of him are the Premier League leaders Arsenal. The Gunners have already signed one Chelsea player this season in the shape of Jorginho.

Having seen Chelsea spending the big money on Mykhailo Mudryk, who plays in a similar position to Hudson-Odoi, it does seem as if the club are not interested in keeping the latter when he comes back. Moreover, there is Raheem Sterling and possibly Joao Felix contesting for spots in that position going forward.

More Chelsea News:

Hence, it would make sense for the Blues to let him go for a bargain fee in the summer. The destination could get better because selling him to Arsenal is directly improving a rival.
