Leicester City are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek
According to journalist Simon Phillips (h/t Leicester Mercury), Leicester City are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the January transfer window.
But, according to Daily Mail, Newcastle United are also keeping a close eye on the Blues midfielder, who hasn’t played for the west London club since picking up an injury playing against the Magpies before the World Cup.
It is revealed that while Loftus-Cheek has played some part this season, his minutes may be restricted going forward as Chelsea are interested in signing a midfielder this month. Brighton and Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo is on top of the wishlist.
The 26-year-old’s contract with the Blues expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). So, irrespective of whether he leaves the club now or not, the decision time is not far with regards to what the future of the player is. Will he sign a new deal and stay here, leave now on a permanent deal or go for free in 2024? Only time will tell.
The club academy product has not been a regular starter in any of the seasons in west London. He has spent two seasons on loan at Fulham in 2020/21 and Crystal Palace in 2017/18.
Under Thomas Tuchel, he was used in different positions in midfield and sometimes as a wing-back. Graham Potter used him predominantly as a central midfielder.
If we are sure of signing a midfielder now and then getting another one in the summer, then there is no point keeping Loftus-Cheek. He can be a good backup option, but he is 26 now and may want to play for a team where he is starting regularly.
