PL club to trigger Belgium star’s contract extension clause amid Chelsea interest

Brighton & Hove Albion set to trigger a one-year extension in Chelsea linked Leandro Trossard’s current contract

According to Football Correspondent Alex Crook via his Twitter (h/t Football London), Brighton & Hove Albion are triggering the one-year extension in Chelsea target Leandro Trossard‘s current contract, which was due to finish at the end of the current season.

Trossard has been linked with Chelsea over the past few months, especially since the appointment of Graham Potter as the Blues boss, who is keen to reunite with a player he managed at his former club.

Trossard, on the other hand, is having a very impressive season with the Seagulls and has scored 7 goals and contributed to 3 assists, which has seen his team in the top half of the season. The Belgium international was also in the Red Devil’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, although he had a tournament to forget along with his teammates.

The current season struggles at Chelsea under Graham Potter where the team has won one game out of the last seven league games is a bad sight and something needs to be done to change the slump of form.

Potter knows the quality and capability of playing multiple positions that Trossard will bring to the current set-up and will definitely be a good addition.

However, the January transfer window has seen Chelsea splurge a huge amount of money to bring in talented young players who would make the core of the team in the coming years.

Forwards Christopher Nkunku and David Datro Fofana have signed alongside midfielder Andrey Santos while Enzo Fernandez’s deal with SL Benfica is also close to competition.

Hence, the club would be reluctant to spend big on Trossard with the positions that he mainly thrives under all being taken up while the charm of a free transfer is also out of grasp.

However, with the manner in which Todd Boehly has been running the operations at Chelsea, there could be no surprise of the incoming that can come at the Bridge. After all, the way we have been doing business, anything is possible with regards to Trossard.

More Chelsea News:

With a busy summer window ahead added to an already well-planned January transfer window, there is a sense of optimism for Blues supporters in an otherwise bleak season so far.
