Christian Pulisic could be on the transfer market if Chelsea acquire a new winger in the January transfer window. Pulisic, who is expected to be sidelined for several weeks due to a knee injury, could be allowed to leave this season following a sluggish start in the Premier League.
According to Fabrizio Romano on CaughtOffside (h/t football.london), Chelsea have not made the decision yet but are exploring the options to add a new attacker up front, which could be at the expense of Pulisic.
Todd Boehly splurged lavishly in the summer window as Chelsea purchased Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The trend has continued in the winter, with the club signing David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, and Benoit Badiashile, for a sum of £60 million, and the Blues are eager to make further signings.
Along with Arsenal, the club has been linked with new players such as Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach and Mykhaylo Mydryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.
And the former player’s deal ends this summer, but Chelsea are attempting to secure the forward from the German club in order to ease their concerns about their attackers. He can play as a No. 9 as well as a winger.
Chelsea are enduring a stressful season, which has caused scrutiny for the club, with manager Graham Potter still looking for the missing links to create a unified team.
Aside from incomings, Chelsea may release some of its periphery players who have been unable to make an impression, and Pulisic has lately been added to the club’s list of expendable players. And transfer expert Romano has weighed in on the Pulisic scenario.
“At the moment, there is nothing concrete or advanced. But I’m told Christian Pulisic could leave the club in January if Chelsea brings in a new winger. Of course, it depends on clubs making offers and many other factors. As of now, it’s a scenario and not a negotiation.”
Despite having a decent 2022 FIFA World Cup, it was expected by fans that Pulisic would be able to kick on and put in impressive displays at the club level. But it hasn’t been the case as he hasn’t made a tangible impact in the Premier League despite featuring in our last three league games.
And if Chelsea sign either Mydryk or Thuram, Pulisic could well be headed for the exit doors. Pulisic hasn’t convinced the majority of the fanbase that he can be the player he promised to be during his time with Borussia Dortmund.
If Potter believes that there is an upgrade we can make in this area that can help us in the present and the future, then it is perhaps wise for us to cut our ties with the USMNT star and cut our losses. After all, he only has 18 months left on his deal (Transfermarkt).
If he doesn’t renew his deal, then we run the risk of losing a 24-year-old star for nothing, or very less in transfer fee.
