Chelsea will not restart contract talks with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

According to Evening Standard, Chelsea will not restart contract talks with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in April or May, and would rather want to sell him.

The 30-year-old Senegal international, who rejected an extension offer from the Blues citing it as disrespectful to his position in the team, has a contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt).

Chelsea are now in the market for a goalkeeping signature in the summer, with Brentford stopper David Raya heavily linked. They would want to sell either Mendy or Kepa Arrizabalaga before that.

At the moment, it looks like the AFCON 2022 will bid adieu to the club in the summer. He has suitors in Europe with AC Milan, AS Monaco and Nice interested.

Mendy has had a difficult season after a tough ending to the last. It probably started when he gifted Karim Benzema the goal during the Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid.

The 30-year-old made a wobbly start to this campaign, with a horror mistake against Leeds United and showing signs of no confidence between the posts. In the World Cup too, he showed traces of vulnerability despite a heroic display against Qatar.

When Graham Potter became the manager, he preferred Kepa in goal irrespective of whether Mendy is fit or not. Add to that he is one of the lowest-paid players in the team, it does look like the Senegal star won’t be interested to stay here beyond the summer.

If indeed this is a farewell to Mendy, we will never forget the 2020/21 season, where he was one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. He played a key role in us lifting the Champions League in 2021, beating Manchester City in the final.

More Chelsea News:

He had a good start to last season as well, just a shame that things unravelled quickly.
