Chelsea emerge as favourites to buy Pedro Porro from Sporting CP ahead of Tottenham
Chelsea might edge Tottenham Hotspur in the acquisition of Pedro Porro from Sporting CP. As reported by the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are the leading candidates to sign the player.
Chelsea are clearly suffering in the league and have remained a mediocre team that appears to provide no competition in the game, and their humiliating 4-0 defeat to Manchester City emphasised a grim reality in which certain areas need to be ramped up.
Chelsea are currently closer to signing the 23-year-old from Sporting CP than Tottenham, and it may be a good addition for the Blues considering their injury list. Porro is a dynamic player who can play in midfield and defence on the right flank.
And he can be an ideal backup for Reece James, but it will be difficult for Potter to decide whether to start Porro or James in that spot once both are fit. The Spaniard isn’t shabby going forward, as his record of 10 assists and two goals in 22 games across all competitions bears witness.
Hence, he could be a weapon to use down the right flank, but we already do have James. So, if the Sporting full-back is willing to join us and accept his position as James’ understudy or backup, it would be the ideal scenario.
It also largely depends on how long the 23-year-old takes to acclimatise to the Premier League since he will not be a regular starter for Chelsea until then. He has experience playing in Manchester City’s youth squads, but senior football in the Premier League could be a whole different gravy.
Overall, he might be a fantastic purchase because he is young and will provide more in the future, and it will be interesting to see what plans we have for James and Porro if both end up at the same club.

Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell are currently fighting for the starting spot down the left-hand flank. If similar competition can be induced at the right-back spot, then it would really be ideal considering we lack a natural attacking backup for James.
