Chelsea looks to be in a battle to sign French striker Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach for a cost of £8.5million, as per CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs. Although Thuram’s contract expires at the conclusion of the season, Chelsea are aiming to acquire the striker in January.
The Blues have been pretty busy in the transfer window, with the most recent additions of Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, and David Datro Fofana. And it seems that they don’t want to stop there, with their supposed interest in Thuram.
Although Arsenal are also interested in signing Marcus Thuram, Chelsea intend to complete the move in the January transfer period earlier than Arsenal. And according to Jacobs, any suitor for the versatile 25-year-old French forward could sign him for a modest fee. On twitter, Jacobs wrote:
“The Blues perspective it’s not Mykhalo Mudryk or Marcus Thuram. They are working on both, Chelsea knows each other target has complications. The issue with Mudryk is the asking price coupled with the player’s desire to join Arsenal. Challenge with Thuram is getting a deal done.”
“Chelsea believes they can agree to a fee with Borussia Monchengladbach, potentially as low as £8.5m. But Thuram has lots of options and will be available on a free transfer this summer. Chelsea will push for January and it will likely come down to whether Thuram wants a mid-season move.”
Chelsea’s injury list has swelled since the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with Raheem Sterling, Christian Pulisic, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joining the list. Recce James, who has recently returned from a knee injury, was once again limped off in a Bournemouth game and his recovery is doubtful.
And the Stamford Bridge team has remained ineffective in front of goal, as Chelsea failed to register a shot on target in the first half of their 4-0 FA Cup setback to Manchester City, raising warning bells for Potter.
With Chelsea now contemplating signing Thuram, it could be a brilliant purchase for a mere £8.5 million. The striker has been in exceptional form lately, scoring 10 goals and three assists in 15 Bundesliga outings for the German giants.
We haven’t had a reliable number 9 for a while. Hopefully, Thuram is the forward to break that curse and for the potential price tag that is mentioned above, it won’t be a huge financial risk as well.
