Chelsea were once again failed to score a goal as they settled for a draw against Liverpool in the Premier League game, which further put their hopes for the Champions League in doubt.
Despite a draw, Mykhaylo Mudryk, the £88.5million acquisition for Chelsea grabbed all the attention as he made his Chelsea debut against Merseysiders.
Lewis Hall was replaced by the 22-year-old in the 55th minute, and from that point until the final whistle, Mudryk caused all sorts of difficulties for the Liverpool defence, particularly for veteran midfielder James Milner, who was unable to keep a hold of him.
The former Shakhtar Donetsk player outran him so many times that Milner had to bring him down, which saw him get a yellow card, and Jurgen Klopp’s panic saw him replace Milner as Trent Alexander-Arnold was introduced.
Mudryk’s pace and confidence in beating defenders suggested the Blues invested in the right player, but it’s too early to say this as he only played his first match for the West Londoners.
And his performance seems to have caught the eye of former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand. He was evidently vowed by the Ukraine international’s skills and told BT Sport while covering the match (h/t Mirror):
We’ve all seen the clips of him and that explosive pace. But what I liked about him today is we saw soft feet on him and a good weight of pass too.
“He was making good decisions in the final third and was showing calmness while running at speed. Those elements make him a frightening proposition for full-backs when he gets into full flow. This is only his first minutes in a month or so.”
We can all agree with Ferdinand’s assessment that Mudryk was extremely influential and made a difference, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves—this was only his first game—and let’s just hope he continues to put up similar displays each time out to aid Chelsea in their offensive strategy.
The 22-year-old would have won over Chelsea supporters because no other player has recently displayed this level of play at the club. Let’s just hope the team gets back on track and resumes its winning ways.
These comments from Ferdinand just go to show how much he is impressing people that don’t have any affiliation with Chelsea. The Englishman was one of the best defenders during his playing days and if he thinks Mudryk is a handful, then good luck to the full-backs that will be coming up against him in the Premier League.
