According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are eyeing up a move for young Real Madrid defender Rafa Marin, who could be available for a cut-down price.
Marin, whose contract in the Spanish capital lasts until the summer of 2024, is yet to make a senior team appearance for Los Blancos. He arrived there from the Sevilla youth setup in the summer of 2016.
The report states that if Madrid is unable to convince him to sign a contract extension, they would look to offload him in the summer, rather than lose him for free in 2024.
Along with Chelsea, RB Leipzig and Juventus are also monitoring the 20-year-old, who has represented Spain at a youth level. While a January move is unlikely, it is not beyond the realms of possibility. The defender could cost around £5m and £10m.
The Blues have scouted Marin extensively in the past few months. They have a strategy of buying the top young talents and developing them here. They aim to create a multi-club model, just like the Red Bull group.
Since the start of the summer window, the club, now under the stewardship of Todd Boehly and co., following the departure of Roman Abramovich, has spent a considerable amount of money on signing young talents.
Marin is an exciting young centre-back who can operate as a left-back. He has made 16 appearances for Real Madrid Castilla this season, scoring two goals.
Just like most modern Spanish players are, including defenders, the 20-year-old is good at passing out from the back. Along with that, he possesses a good recovery pace and has good physical strength.
For the money reported, he would be a shrewd signing by Chelsea for the future. Let’s hope that we beat Leipzig and Juventus to sign the defender soon.
