Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has agreed to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge
According to journalist Simon Phillips, via Graeme Bailey (h/t Football.London), Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has agreed on terms of a contract extension with the club.
The 38-year-old’s contract at Stamford Bridge currently expires in the coming summer (Transfermarkt). His former club Fluminense were keeping a close eye on whether he signs a new deal here.
A few days ago, The Athletic reported that Chelsea are set to offer a contract extension to the Brazil captain. It seems like he has agreed to the terms and will sign the deal in days to come.
If Silva stays at Chelsea for another season, he would be playing at the elite level at the age of 39. With what we have seen from him this season, age is definitely not an issue.
The former AC Milan and Paris-Saint Germain defender has been impeccable, to say the least. His performance against Liverpool at Anfield last week was an example of how good he still is as a player.
The 38-year-old read the game superbly, marked out the attackers in style, led by personality and experience at the back and guided young defender Benoit Badiashile throughout the match.
Keeping these in mind, it made complete sense for Chelsea to offer him another contract extension. Getting the most out of such a high-level defender is important for the club.
If we remove him from the equation, we have a young core of central defenders – Badiashile (21), Wesley Fofana (22) and Trevoh Chalobah (23). Kalidou Koulibaly is there but his impact at Chelsea hasn’t been good enough.
