Chelsea defender Bashir Humphreys seals loan move to German club Paderborn

Bashir Humphreys, who plays for Chelsea under-21, has joined 2. Bundesliga side Paderborn for the remainder of the season, as confirmed by the official club website.

Paderborn play in the second tier of the German league and are on the verge of Bundesliga promotion. The team is aiming for a promotion if they keep up their present form despite not having played in the German top division for the past four years.

They have now signed the Chelsea U21 starlet who has caught the attention of several Championship and lower-league teams. The 19-year-old has participated in 10 Premier League 2. games for Chelsea U21 and has one goal to his name.

The teenager also had the opportunity to make his senior squad debut when he came off the bench against Manchester City in the FA Cup game and was on the bench in the Liverpool and Crystal Palace games as well.

This implies that the player has made significant progress and should play in a competitive league to develop his defensive qualities.

Paderborn already have ties to Chelsea thanks to sporting director Benjamin Weber, who served as Thomas Tuchel’s assistant at Stamford Bridge in the past. This would have certainly played a part in making this move happen.

The player could get a fantastic opportunity to test his mettle in different leagues and gain more experience. And if the player develops into a seasoned player, he could eventually play for Chelsea in the near future.

The 1.86-meter centre-back, who has one senior appearance for the Blues, has played in 69 games for our youth teams so far. Any experience with a senior squad, be it in Germany, will certainly be crucial to his development.

Paderborn have a wealth of options at centre-back, however, so let’s hope that Humphreys is going there to play rather than only add depth to their team.
