Chelsea are interested in Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes
According to journalist Simon Phillips (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are eyeing up a move to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes.
The Portugal international, who used to play for Sporting Lisbon before signing for Wolves in the preceding summer window, has been a Liverpool target as well. Recently, reports have linked the Reds to him for a summer move.
But, now it seems like Chelsea are also in the race. It remains to be seen whether this interest will lead to an offer, or is it just a backup option for the club.
Nunes is a versatile midfielder who can play both as a central midfielder and an attacking midfielder. At Wolves and Sporting previously, he has chiefly played in a midfield pivot in front of a back three.
Chelsea manager Graham Potter generally prefers to play that system. So, profile-wise, the 24-year-old is a good fit for the Blues.
He is good on the ball, can progress with it through the lines, has a good passing range, loves winning ground duels and has a good recovery pace to match the runs of opposition attackers in defensive transition.
His first season in the Premier League has been more than decent, irrespective of the fact that he is playing for a side that is 19th in the table right now.
With the current options Chelsea have in their central midfield, would Nunes be an upgrade on that? The answer is not just yes in terms of quality, but how young the player is (24). So, if he arrives in the summer, he would be entering the peak stage of his career.

Having arrived at the Molineux in the summer itself, attempting to sign Nunes would not be possible. But, the door may just be open for a summer move. Let’s try and make a move.
