Chelsea’s endeavour for signing a defensive midfielder remains in the January transfer window, with the club making an approach for Everton’s Amadou Onana.
As reported by the Telegraph (via GivemeSport), the player has rebuffed Chelsea’s proposal. Despite the youngster turning down Chelsea’s bid, the transfer hasn’t been explicitly ruled out.
The player’s agent and the club have discussed the player’s switch to Chelsea this season, but no deal has been officially finalised.
The Blues are struggling to find a defensive midfielder after Brighton Hove & Albion rejected their £55 million bid for Moises Caicedo, claiming the Seagulls want £90 million for the youngster.
Additionally, Onana has become a new possibility for the West Londoners, although the 21-year-old has no desire to join Chelsea.
Despite not being an experienced midfielder given his age, the Belgian midfielder has played often this season, appearing in 18 games and contributing one assist. He is also third on the Everton team in tackles made with 2.6 this season.
However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, while speaking to GiveMeSport, the West Londoners have taken steps to sign the Toffees midfielder.
“He’s on the radar of many clubs because, for example, Chelsea had conversations with his agents. They also approached Everton to understand the conditions of the deal for Onana.”
The transfer window is coming to an end, and Chelsea continue to struggle to sign a defensive midfielder. The dilemma of Chelsea’s midfield has persisted despite links with Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
Although a deal in January seems doubtful, the club is running out of time. But it won’t be the end of the world if we are unsuccessful in signing the player.
We must believe in our players. Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic have not been performing well, and this would reassure manager Graham Potter, at least until the end of the season
We should not forget they commanded Chelsea’s midfield along with N’Golo Kante on the club’s path to a Champions League win in the 2020–21 season. But neither Jorginho nor Kante are timeless and they could leave as free agents this summer.
Hence, that seems like the ideal time to pursue a potential replacement, where we would have more time to assess options and where other teams will be perhaps a bit more relaxed on their stance of selling their players.
