As per the quotes from Lance (h/t Football.London), the President of the Brazilian club Fluminense has confirmed that they are monitoring the contract situation of star Chelsea defender Thiago Silva.
Fluminense was the first club Silva played his senior football for. He made 80 appearances in all competitions for them between 2006 and 2008, scoring nine goals and assisting four as a centre-back. The move from there to AC Milan in 2009 introduced him to European football.
The 38-year-old is currently having his contract expire at Stamford Bridge in the summer (Transfermarkt). A couple of days ago, The Athletic did report that Chelsea has held talks with the player for a contract extension. The fact that he is still going so well must be tempting for the Blues to keep him beyond this season.
Here’s what Fluminense President Mario Bittencourt said about the player and their wait (h/t Football.London):
“We are first waiting for his decision there with Chelsea, we don’t know if he will renew there or not. We are waiting for this news, after that we will or not start a conversation with him to make him return to Fluminense.”
It remains to be seen whether Silva will give his all for Chelsea and then hang his boots up, or go back to Brazil with some football left in him and finish his career there.
With what we are seeing from him this season, which was confirmed at Anfield last Saturday, there seems to be a lot left in his tank despite being 38.
The way Silva was handling Chelsea’s back-line and guided young defender Benoit Badiashile throughout the game against Liverpool was exemplary.
If we remove the Brazil captain from the squad, the Blues are left with a very young core of central defenders – Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana. Kalidou Koulibaly is there as a senior presence, but he has not been good for us.
So, not just from the quality viewpoint, we need to keep Silva for at least another season to have experience and guile at the back.
