European giants continue to resist temptation as Chelsea circle for World Cup winner

Benfica respond to Chelsea rekindling interest in Enzo Fernandez

According to Portuguese outlet Record (h/t Metro), Benfica will once again resist the urge to sell Enzo Fernandez amidst renewed interest from Chelsea.

In the last 48 hours, we have seen a report from the Guardian stating that Chelsea are ready to revive their interest in the Argentine World Cup winner, having lost out on him earlier this month.

Benfica remain adamant that the player will only leave the club if his release clause of £105m is paid in full. A few weeks ago, Daily Mail reported that the Portuguese side rejected a £112m offer from Chelsea as they only want the clause amount to be on the table.

Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports updated that the Blues are looking to pay over the odds to make the payment structure in their favour. But, it would appear like Benfica are resisting any temptation for now.

The latest on this is that Chelsea will offer a fee in the region of £88m and a few players to convince the selling club to make the deal happen.

Fernandez is not the only midfielder linked with us during this month’s transfer window though. Brighton and Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo has been heavily linked. The Seagulls have already rejected our opening bid of £55m for the Ecuador international.

Everton’s Amadou Onana is among the midfielders linked. Arsenal are ready to rival us in the signature of the latter two.

We all know how good a player Fernandez is. But, is he worth that much after six good months for Benfica and an excellent World Cup? He was very good for River Plate too, but he is still young in the European game.

More Chelsea News:

If there’s a chance to get Caicedo for lesser money, even if over the market odds, the Blues should focus on getting him rather than the Argentine. They can wait for Fernandez till the summer and see if Benfica change their stance.
