Aston Villa are pondering a summer transfer for Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Aston Villa are contemplating Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signing from Chelsea as the new Villa manager Unai Emery is fond of the player and is looking to sign him.
As Villa looks to replace former striker Danny Ings, Athletic (subscription needed) (h/t Birmingham World) has suggested that Aubameyang might see more playing time under Emery.
The 33-year-old scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for the Spanish powerhouses during his productive season at Barcelona, earning him a €12 million (£10.6 million) summer transfer from Barcelona to Chelsea.
However, things didn’t turn out the way he had envisioned as he has struggled to maintain his form at West London, scoring just three goals in his 17 appearances for the team.
Furthermore, it appears that Graham Potter has lost confidence in the former Arsenal player and is giving Kai Havertz precedence over him. He has played for the Blues in five games since the World Cup, but he has also had injuries.
Additionally, the team is trying to sell the player and Aston Villa have recently emerged as a possible suitor for the Gabon international.
The former Villarreal manager, who Aubameyang previously worked with at Arsenal, may be able to help him reclaim his knack for scoring goals. The 33-year-old scored 41 goals in 67 games while under the manager’s guidance at Arsenal.
Chelsea may be able to offload him given that he hasn’t been reliable up front, but doing so in January could be a problem due to the fact that we don’t have a true striker with Armado Broja out until the end of the season with an ACL injury and Havertz, who isn’t a striker, not always being effective in front of goal.
The club can use Gabon international as a backup striker in clutch games as Aubameyang has always performed well under pressure given the player’s experience and could help Chelsea when coming off the bench.
