Arsenal pursue Chelsea midfielder as Moises Caicedo alternative

Arsenal have contacted Chelsea about signing Jorginho

Arenal have expressed interest in purchasing Jorginho and have approached Chelsea about signing the midfielder in the January transfer window.

According to transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have asked Chelsea for the Italian ace if they fail to bring in Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Hove Albion. Mikel Arteta’s side need a midfielder and they seem determined to land him this month.

Arsenal and Chelsea are competing to sign Caicedo, but Brighton have refused to sell the player during the winter transfer window, prompting Arsenal to approach Chelsea for Jorginho. With the Blues attempting to sign Enzo Fernandez, there is every chance that a transfer merry go around can benefit all parties.

The West London club are better off selling Jorginho this month as they run the risk of losing him on a free in the summer (Transfermarkt). With a new deal nowhere in sight, Todd Boehly and co should cash in.

While selling to a direct rival isn’t advisable, Jorginho is not getting any younger and his lack of pace makes him a liability. Hopefully his potential exit will aid Chelsea more than the Gunners in the months to come.

Jorginho Chelsea’s contract will end at the conclusion of the season.

Chelsea paid £50 million to Napoli for the 31-year-old. Since joining Chelsea, Jorginho has appeared in 213 games, scoring 29 goals and assisting on nine occasions.

He was the standout player when Chelsea won the Champions League in the 2020–21 season, finishing third in the Ballon d’Or standings. He also aided Italy’s dream run at Euro 2020 that culminated with a penalty shootout win over England at Wembley.

However, the 31-year-old has not been in genuine form since then and has continued to struggle to find consistency in games. Despite appearing 18 times in the Premier League this season. Jorginho has had little sway in midfield, and if Chelsea manages to sign Fernandez from Benfica, the Italian would cease to be an essential player for the club.

Chelsea could follow Manchester City’s lead and sell him to clubs from other leagues rather than any Premier League club. But with no other club making a move, our chances are fairly limited.
