In a post made on Instagram (h/t Evening Standard), Chelsea star Wesley Fofana has downplayed the severity of his latest injury. This news should come as a relief to all Blues’ fans ahead of the return of club football.
The Blues face off against Bournemouth on Tuesday (27 December) as the festive fixtures kick off the second half of the campaign post the World Cup. While it remains unclear if Fofana will take part in the match, it would appear that his injury is not as bad as originally feared.
The Frenchman moved to Stamford Bridge from Leicester City last summer. While his talent is not in question, Fofana has been limited to just six appearances for the Blues thanks to injuries.
Fofana went down with a knee injury against Brentford earlier this month in a moment that would have left Graham Potter’s heart in his mouth. The 22-year-old will not undergo a scan and could be set for another spell on the sidelines.
Talking about the injury on Instagram, Fofana went on to reply that it is not very bad, which hinted that a return could be on the cards within a month. While his absence will still be felt, the club will do well to ensure that he makes a full recovery before being deployed onto the field.
Graham Potter’s men will play games before the end of January and have some high profile clashes against Manchester City and Liverpool on their books. With the race for top four gathering steam, we cannot afford to drop cheap points, especially to direct rivals.
Fofana’s injury places strain on a defence that has been less than stellar this season. However, at 22, he is a long term solution and it makes little sense for us to rush him back. While his absence will be felt, it makes sense for Potter and co to adopt a long term look at the issue.
Hopefully, the player’s scans should not reveal anything too bad and he should be on the road to recovery soon. It remains to be seen if Potter will provide further positive insights on the matter in the coming days.
