Transfer News: Glen Johnson has urged Christian Pulisic to stay put at Chelsea amid Manchester United interest

Former Chelsea right-back Glen Johnson has urged USMNT star Christian Pulisic to stay put at the west London club amid interest from rivals Manchester United.

Pulisic was linked with a loan move to the Red Devils back in August as he was believed to be frustrated with then manager Thomas Tuchel and his lack of playing time. While things have improved a bit under Graham Potter, his future still remains uncertain.

The 24-year-old has played in 18 games so far in all competitions, starting in only five of them. He enjoyed a decent campaign with USMNT at the World Cup, helping them reach the Round of 16 stage.

Now, former Blues defender Johnson while speaking on Midnite (h/t Football. London), has urged the former Borussia Dortmund man to stay put, but believes the winger needs to “prove” his potential.

“I want Chelsea to keep Christian Pulisic, he shouldn’t leave for Manchester United. I have defended him for a long time and said he has so much potential, but now he needs to prove it. He still has loads to give, give him one more serious season, but if we’re having the same conversations this time next year, he has to go.”

Johnson is not wrong in his opinion. The 24-year-old was one of the best youngsters at the German club, but has struggled in front of goal at the west London club. The winger has played a total of 133 games for the Blues in all competitions, scoring only 26 times in that process.

But he looked to be at his best in Qatar. Potter would have seen him play for his country and it will be wise on his part to give the winger some more game time. It takes time and trust to build confidence and the manager could play a huge part by taking the first step.

It will be wise on the player’s part too to reciprocate that trust on the pitch and deliver for his team. With a hectic second half of the season coming up, the USMNT winger could play a crucial role for us.

More Chelsea News:

The Blues will return to Premier League action on Tuesday (December 27) when they host Bournemouth. Chelsea need a win after having lost their previous three league games and the 24-year-old could be in contention to start the game at Stamford Bridge.
