Inter Milan and The Netherlands right-back Denzel Dumfries believes it is a ‘compliment’ to be linked with a move to Chelsea. The player told this to The Athletic (h/t Express) when asked about his links to the west London club.
“Of course it’s a compliment. But when you put the Nerazzurri shirt on, that is also a big compliment. I’m focused on the national team and I play for a very, very beautiful club in Italy. I’m very proud that I can play for Inter so I am focused on nothing else but the national team and Inter.”
The Blues have been linked with a move for the Dutchman, with Graham Potter wanting to add an understudy for Reece James in his squad. The England international has been our best player so far, but a recent injury to him has shown the lack of depth on the right side of the pitch.
Potter has used multiple players in that position to no avail. The likes of Ruben-Loftus Cheek, Christian Pulisic and even Raheem Sterling have played there, but none have been half as good as James.
Dumfries was the star of the show for his country during their 3-1 win over the USMNT in the Round of 16 of the World Cup. The 26-year-old was involved in all the goals, assisting two and also getting on the scoresheet himself.
The Netherlands international joined Inter from PSV Eindhoven in 2021. Since then, he has been a first-team player for his club having played a total of 65 games for the Nerazzurri in all competitions so far since then.
A quality right-back who can also play as a centre-back, the 26-year-old makes a very suitable candidate to bring into the club to increase depth and competition within the squad.
While the Dutchman is the undisputed first-choice at Inter, he will have to compete for a place with James here in west London. The Cobham graduate is likely to remain the first choice after he returns from his injury and this could play an important factor for the right-back to ponder over a move.
Inter are likely to do everything they can to keep the player till this season. With his exceptional performances in the World Cup this year, the Blues could be tempted to make a move next month when the winter transfer window opens.
