According to Relevo (h/t Metro), Arsenal are preparing a new contract to offer to Lazio and Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The 27-year-old has been of interest to Chelsea and Manchester United.
The Gooners saw a bid for the midfielder get rejected during the summer. It seems they have not given up hope and are preparing a new offer for the player. It is believed that the 27-year-old would be available for around £69 million in January, but could see that price-tag drop drastically to £34-43 million next summer.
This is because the midfielder sees his current contract expire in the summer of 2024 and he has no intention of signing a new deal with his current employers. Serie A giants Juventus are also interested in the Serbian midfielder.
Graham Potter could do with a midfielder like the Serbian in his squad. The 6ft 2in player is a commanding presence to have in one’s midfield, with the 27-year-old capable of defending and going forward throughout the game.
Jorginho and N’Golo Kante see their contract expire next summer and are also past their prime. A box-to-box midfielder will be needed to replace them going forward, especially the latter. Milinkovic-Savic could make a very suitable candidate.
A regular for both club and country, he has played in 20 games this season in all competitions, scoring five and assisting another seven in the process. He is also 27, an age that is usually considered to be the prime time for players to reach their full potential.
But the north London club seem determined to land the player after failing to have done so in the summer. It will be wise for the Blues also to enter the race and make enquiries about the midfielder.
It remains to be seen if the west London side makes any approach for the midfielder next month. A commanding midfielder, it would be a shame to see him in the colours of our local rivals going forward.
