There is a growing expectation that Jorginho will leave Chelsea in the summer
According to The Athletic (subscription required), There is a growing expectation that midfielder Jorginho will leave Chelsea in the summer once his contract expires.
The report also reveals that both parties are no closer to agreeing on the terms of a new deal. A couple of months ago, it was reported in the Evening Standard that Chelsea have offered a new deal to the Italian international, but he wants a pay rise at par with what the club captain Cesar Azpilicueta is earning.
The thing to note is that Azpilicueta himself signed a new deal in the preceding summer. So, maybe being the vice-captain of the team, Jorginho wanted wages which reflects his status in the squad.
As of now, it doesn’t seem like the 31-year-old is signing a new contract at Stamford Bridge. The rules say that foreign clubs can start negotiating a deal with him from January 1 onward and make him sign a pre-contract agreement for the eventual move in the summer.
If that is to be the case, then Chelsea are set to lose two senior midfielders in the same summer due to contract expiry. N’Golo Kante is also in the same boat and he has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona over the past few weeks.
Jorginho has been a solid player for the Blues since arriving from Napoli for £50m in the summer of 2018. He took some time to settle down in the Premier League, but slowly became a key player and a leader of the team.
