According to Spanish publication Sport (h/t Football. London), Chelsea may look to sign 28-year-old Dutch striker Memphis Depay from Barcelona in January to reinforce their options in attack.
The injury to Armando Broja which would see the Albanian striker miss footballing action until next season means that the Blues have to find someone else to lead the line. They do have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but they need other options.
Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz are players who can play through the middle and even Christian Pulisic is an outside option to play in that position but it is likely that the Blues will look to reinforce in January.
One player who could be available for a very low price due to his contract and his current situation with Barcelona is Depay. The Dutch forward has struggled at the Spanish club this season and is too good a player to be warming the benches there.
The presence of Robert Lewandowski has meant that the Dutchman has been unable to play as much as he would have liked. He has also been injured for a significant chunk of the season and came back just recently.
Barcelona could look to get the player off their wage books and might be willing to part ways with him in January. He is in the last year of his contract and might not cost much for Chelsea. On paper, it seems like a very smart move for us to make.
Graham Potter and the Blues however need to analyse and figure out if they need someone in Memphis’ profile. The Barcelona man is not a pure number nine and in some way, is quite similar to Havertz.
Yes, Depay has shown that he can be a consistent goalscorer for quite some time now. Chelsea however, could do much better off with a pure number nine who can be a poacher in the box and bang in goals for fun.
Considering the fact that Depay might not cost much in terms of a transfer fee, Chelsea could do with signing him for squad depth. However, their focus must be on a classical number nine in January and let’s hope the Blues make that their priority.
