Report: Real Madrid could hijack Chelsea’s move to sign in-demand Brazilian midfielder

Real Madrid could hijack Chelsea’s move to sign Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos

According to French outlet Le10Sport (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are set to beat Paris-Saint Germain and Barcelona in a bid to sign Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos, but Real Madrid could hijack the move.

A few days ago, Evening Standard reported that the Blues are in advanced talks to sign the 18-year-old for a fee of around £12m in January. They stole a march on PSG.

But, the latest report from Spanish outlet Defensa Central (h/t Football.London) does suggest that European champions Madrid are also in the race. Santos is likened to Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes with regard to his playing style and profile.

Real Madrid could hijack the move from Chelsea to sign Andrey Santos.

Although it is not clear whether the Spanish giants have made an offer, an indication is there that the player could reject a move to Stamford Bridge if concrete interest comes from Madrid.

This is the second young Brazilian talent Chelsea have been after since keeping a close eye on 16-year-old Endrick. PSG and Real Madrid are in the race with them for that player as well.

Santos is a central midfielder by trade who can operate in defensive midfield if required. He was a Vasco da Gama youth product before graduating to the senior team at the start of this year. He has a senior contract with them until September 2027 (Transfermarkt).

In the recently-concluded Serie B season before the World Cup, Santos scored eight goals in 33 league appearances. He played most of the games as a defensive midfielder but was also used higher up the pitch.

Chelsea have not been hesitant in spending money on young players under the new regime. They signed a number of young talents in the summer window, including Omari Hutchinson, Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka.

It is all in line with the plan of co-owner Todd Boehly who wants to sign top young talents, who would elevate the standards of the youth team and fight for a place in the senior team simultaneously.

We would love to see if Santos comes to Chelsea and develops his game here. Generally, young South American players attract towards Madrid though.
