Manchester United eager to sign Chelsea target Denzel Dumfries
According to Sky Germany (h/t Standard Sport), Manchester United and their boss, Erik ten Hag are eager to sign Chelsea target and Dutch international Denzel Dumfries in January.
The wing-back, who was part of the Netherlands squad that reached the quarter-final of the World Cup before losing to Argentina only on penalties, is currently playing for Inter Milan in club football.
A few days, Football.London reported that while the Nerazzurri would want to ward off interest from clubs by slapping a price tag of £50m on the player, they are open to selling him because of their wobbly financial situation.
United are interested in signing Dumfries as they want to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has struggled for game time this season. So, if they sign the Inter man, he can directly compete with Diogo Dalot for the right-back spot.
Chelsea, on the other hand, were keen on signing the 26-year-old as they are concerned by the number of injuries Reece James has picked up in the last 12 months. Hence, they want a positional backup player.
Dumfries is a quality player who has made the right wing-back position his own in the last year or so. He can play as a right-back or as a right-sided centre-back, but the wing-back role suits him best.
He was one of the stars of the Dutch team in Qatar. In the last-16 tie against the USA, the former PSV Eindhoven player assisted two goals and scored one in a 3-1 win.
His attributes are quite similar to James’ in terms of going forward and being a menace in the final third with crossing and chance creation, but remaining agile and vigilant to the defensive work required. Both are physically strong as well.

So, if Chelsea are worried by James’ injury situation, they would need to push forward with the Dumfries deal because United now have got an eye in. We would not be wanting to lose him to a direct rival in the league.
