Transfer News: Manchester City could target Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell

According to reports via Daily Mail, Manchester City could be set to pursue a deal for talented English left-back Ben Chilwell from Chelsea.

Chilwell’s time at the Blues has been rather mixed. Whilst there is absolutely no doubt about the quality that he possesses, the problem with former Leicester fullback has been hit with fitness troubles for much of his time here.

The talented English left-back has had a nightmare with injuries ever since last season. He missed the entirety of the second half of the previous campaign due to an ACL injury and since coming back, has struggled with recurrent problems.

It was due to these injuries that Chilwell had to miss a ticket to Qatar with the English national team. He would have been hoping to compete with Luke Shaw for a starting role but that was not to be.

Manchester City have struggled without a proper left-back for quite some time now. Ever since the indefinite suspension of Benjamin Mendy, Pep Guardiola has not really had a natural player in that position.

The Premier League champions signed Sergio Gomez in the summer but have chosen to play Joao Cancelo out of position. To be fair to the Portuguese full-back, he does a pretty commendable job playing there.

Chilwell would be the perfect solution for City and he would be a player who can thrive in a Pep Guardiola system. However, the Manchester club will be sceptical about his less-than-favourable injury record.

If Chelsea choose to sign Chilwell, they are likely to trust Marc Cucurella to be their first choice. The Spanish left-back is very talented and has the quality to be a very good player for the Blues in the present and the future.

Potter has the decision to make with Chilwell. If he thinks that he can do without the English left-back, there is no reason why Chelsea must not cash in on him. This is an interesting story to keep a look out for.
