Paulo Fonseca admits Chelsea target Jonathan David could leave Lille in 2023
Speaking to La Voix des Sports as quoted by Football. London, Lille manager Paulo Fonseca has admitted that it would be tough for the French club to keep hold of Chelsea target Jonathan David beyond this season.
The Canadian is a highly-rated young striker who is sought after by many clubs around the world. Chelsea are no different with Graham Potter said to be a huge fan of the talented forward.
The 22-year-old striker has been showing his quality for quite some time now. He joined the French club from Gent in 2020. He has since then been one of the standout young strikers in the world.
David got a chance to showcase his quality in the World Cup in Qatar. The Canadian led the line for his nation and despite some impressive performances, they could not get past the group stage.
The talented striker did not score at the World Cup in the three appearances but he has been a rather consistent scorer for his club. At his age, David is pretty composed in front of goal and he will only get better.
In 17 matches for Lille this season across all competitions, he has scored ten goals and provided four assists. He will be hoping to continue the good form in the second half of the season if he still continues Lille.
Speaking about the prospect of keeping the player, here is what the manager Fonseca had to say about the prospects of keeping hold of David.
“It will be difficult to keep Jonathan David at the club next season. There are not many strikers with his skills and numbers in Europe… he’s just 22.”
Chelsea have been in the search for a long-term solution to their number nine problem and David could be the answer. He is just 22 and can be our striker for a decade to come if he can live up to this initial promise.
