Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah believes his side can do better in the second half of the season and has admitted that it was a hard period for the Blues in the first half of the season.
The 23-year-old has been a regular for Graham Potter this season, playing in 13 games so far in all competitions. While he started the season on the bench, an injury to Wesley Fofana saw him return to the starting eleven and he has excelled since then.
Currently in Abu Dhabi for a December break along with 25 other players, the centre-back has opened up about the first half of the season and believes his side can do much better in the second half (h/t Chelsea website).
“As a team, we know we can do better. We were in a hard period before the break, we had a lot of games with a lot of minutes. It is important to refresh mentally and go again. It has been a long break so far.”
“It is important to re-charge, re-group, and be physically ready for the second half of the season. We are doing a lot of conditioning work and that’s what we are working on, and we are getting ready for the Aston Villa match on Sunday.”
A Cobham graduate, Chalobah gradually rose through the ranks and spent time on loan at different clubs like Ipswich Town, Huddersfield and FC Lorient before breaking into the senior team last season.
He surprisingly played 30 games in all competitions last season under Thomas Tuchel and showed everyone that he was ready to be a regular for the Blues. He excelled playing as a centre-back, but also showed his versatility by playing as a right-back when required.
Despite having to fight for a place in the team this season, the 23-year-old has not backed down and has stepped up when his side needed him the most. His loyalty has also been awarded to the English defender penning a new deal in SW6 that will keep him at the club till 2028.
The Blues, meanwhile, have struggled in the league this season. We currently sit eight on the table with 21 points, 16 behind leaders Arsenal. While our title hopes may be over, a top-four finish is still possible and the club should give their all to achieve this goal.
Chelsea will return to action after a month when they take on Aston Villa for a friendly tomorrow (December 11). Chalobah will likely start the game, while Potter will hope for a win to boost the confidence within the squad ahead of their Premier League game against Bournemouth on December 27.
