Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has rejected a six-year-long contract extension

Chelsea and Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has rejected a mega six-year-deal contract extension with the Blues, according to a report in The Sun. It is believed that he was not happy with the wages being offered.

The 30-year-old earns around £100,000-a-week and is believed to want parity with competitor Kepa Arrizabalaga who earns almost double what the Senegal international earns. It is now claimed that the bosses at the west London club have withdrawn their initial offer.

Mendy sees his current contract expire in 2025 and is currently back in training with the west London club. His future remains uncertain amid the stand-off with AC Milan, OGC Nice and AS Monaco keeping tabs on his current contract situation.

Chelsea signed the 30-year-old in the summer of 2020 from French side Stade de Rennes for £22 million. He was bought in to compete with Kepa who had been going through a bad spell in between the sticks for the Blues then.

Mendy was an instant hit at the west London club, helping us win the Champions League in his first season at the club. He would then also play his part as the Blues went on to pick the Super Cup and Club World Cup.

He was also the star for his country as he helped Senegal win the Africa Cup of Nations and even was their main man in between the sticks at the World Cup in Qatar this year. The African side crashed out after losing 3-0 to England in the Round of 16.

While he is still the number one for his country, he has lost his position as the undisputed first-choice here at Chelsea. The 30-year-old picked up an injury in between and Kepa stepped up as the Spaniard looked to be back at his best. He seems to have won over Graham Potter who is likely to prefer him over Mendy going forward.

More Chelsea News:

It will be wise for the Blues to keep the 30-year-old. He is just going through a rough patch and with a little bit of trust, he will no doubt bounce back to his best. It remains to be seen if the two parties can break the stand-off and reach an agreement over a new contract for the keeper.
