Speaking to Midnite (h/t Football.London), former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has urged the club to sign superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for six months.
Ronaldo had his Manchester United contract terminated by mutual consent at the back end of last month. He is now a free agent, but with high wage demands as expected. Recent reports suggest that Saudi Arabia club Al-Nassr are close to signing him.
When the 37-year-old exited United, the Telegraph reported that Chelsea have no intention of going back to sign the Portuguese star, after they tried in the summer.
Here’s what Johnson said regarding Ronaldo and Chelsea’s need to get him (h/t Football.London):
“I would take Cristiano Ronaldo at Chelsea for six months, absolutely. Ronaldo has been the second or third-best player we’ve seen in our generation. If Ronaldo wants to be back in the same rank as Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi or Neymar, he needs to improve.”
We all know that Blues chairman Todd Boehly wanted to sign Ronaldo before the start of this season, but former manager Thomas Tuchel blocked the move, which in turn became one of the reasons for the duo having a rift (Mirror).
After seeing the year the veteran has had, is it worth taking a punt on him? Probably so. Chelsea have struggled to find the back of the net this season with the current forward options they have.
Even if he is not the most mobile player anymore, Ronaldo knows where the goal is and has a habit of finding them more often than not.
Could Graham Potter trade work-rate with clinical finishing for a few months till the end of this season? He should. To be honest, even at this age, Ronaldo loves a challenge and loves proving people wrong.
With how his image has been portrayed in the last few months (a few things because of his mistakes), the 37-year-old would want to hit back on the field at some point. Chelsea can use that inner fire of the player to their advantage to finish this season strongly.
The headlines such a move would grab off the pitch would be immense and it would truly bring the spotlight on the Blues. If Todd Beohly has been looking to make a statement signing to announce his arrival, this is it.
