A View From The Bridge

Chelsea continue to hold interest in Mexican star ahead of January transfer window

Chelsea still have keen interest in Edson Alvarez ahead of the January transfer window

According to Football.London, Chelsea still have a keen interest in Ajax midfielder and Mexico international Edson Alvarez ahead of the January transfer window.

The Blues have been linked with Alvarez since the latter half of the summer window. They even made a move to sign him at the time, but Ajax rejected the offer as it was late in the window and they wouldn’t have enough time to find a replacement.

Alvarez expressed his disappointment multiple times at missing out on an opportunity to move to Stamford Bridge in the summer. Quoted by Daily Mail, the midfielder talked about being disappointed but carrying the hope that a club will come for him in the coming transfer windows.

Chelsea still keen on signing Edson Alvarez in January.

Football.London reports that making additions in the central midfield department is a priority for Chelsea in the January window and then the coming summer.

We all are aware that they are linked with Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, but an interest in Alvarez has not gone away.

The Mexican international, who was part of the national team squad that was knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage, can play as a defensive midfielder and a centre-back. His contract at Amsterdam lasts until the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt).

Chelsea have two midfielders who have their contracts ending in the coming summer – N’Golo Kante and Jorginho. So far, the duo have not signed an extension. As per the rules, they can start negotiating with foreign clubs from January 1 and potentially sign a pre-contract agreement.

Alvarez can be an ideal addition to the squad in the defensive midfield department. He is good on the ball, reads the game well, is physically strong and does not shirk away from making tackles to break the opposition attacks up.

More Chelsea News:

We missed out on him in the summer. The same thing should not be repeated next month. He is a player that can anchor our midfield for the foreseeable future and alleviate a lot of stress from Potter’s shoulder with regard to his options in the middle of the park.
