According to journalist Ekrem Konur (h/t Express), Chelsea sent scouts to Qatar to have a closer look at Argentine fullback Nahuel Molina who has impressed many people in the tournament.
Molina, who scored in the quarter-final of the World Cup against the Netherlands, is currently plying his trade for the Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
The 24-year-old is a versatile fullback who can operate both as a right and left-back and can play as a wing-back. He impressed in the latter’s role in the South American side’s win over the Dutch.
If Chelsea are interested in signing him in January, there might be an issue as Molina joined Atletico Madrid in the preceding summer itself from Udinese. His current contract at the Wanda Metropolitano runs until the summer of 2027 (Transfermarkt).
The Blues are looking to add a player to their right-back/wing-back department as they are worried by the number of injuries Reece James has picked up in the last 12 months. For that reason, they are in the race to sign Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries as well.
Molina, on the other hand, is an excellent player who has grown in stature in the last year or so. He played 18 times in all competitions for Atleti in the first half of this season, assisting two goals.
With regards to attributes, the Argentine possesses excellent pace to make runs up and down the field on the right-hand side. He is good at passing and crossing, along with great dribbling skills to take on defenders in wide areas. His defensive skills aren’t too bad either, with his pace a major weapon in making recoveries.
If the Blues are looking at a player similar to James in profile, Molina is an option for sure. Now, it remains to be seen when they will make a move for him.
