According to journalist Ben Jacobs via GiveMeSport (h/t Leicester Mercury), Chelsea are looking at a possibility to sign Leicester City star and England international James Maddison.
Northern Echo reports that Newcastle United are still interested in the player after missing out on him during the summer transfer window because of the difference in valuation.
The report also suggests that Tottenham Hotspur have had a long-standing interest in the playmaker, and their interest dates back to several transfer windows.
Maddison, who is probably one of the in-form English players in the Premier League, deservedly made his way into the England World Cup squad to feature in Qatar.
He was not a part of the squad in the first two games as the recovery from an injury he picked up against West Ham United a weekend before the World Cup took some time. He was an unused sub in England’s 3-0 thrashing of neighbours Wales.
With regards to how good the 26-year-old has been this season, he scored seven goals and assisted four in 13 league appearances during the first half of the season. Bearing in mind that Leicester were bottom after the first seven games of the season before jumping up, those numbers are frightening. He was almost carrying the team alone in many games.
Chelsea have Mason Mount as a creative force in the team but the list pretty much ends there. Wide forwards have struggled while the strikers are either not ruthless enough or not getting enough chances through the middle. The team is kind of dependent on services from wide areas, with Reece James highly prominent.
So, there might be a place for a player like Maddison who can dictate games on the ball in the opposition half. He can score, assist, create chances and work hard off the ball. His current contract at the King Power Stadium expires in around 18th months (Transfermarkt). Is it time for the Blues to try and nick him from Leicester? We would love to see him in a Chelsea shirt that’s for sure!
