Chelsea in race with Spurs to sign USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football.London), Chelsea have joined local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign USMNT and Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

McKennie, who was part of the USA squad that reached the knock-out stage of the World Cup, has been linked with a move to a Premier League club for some time now.

The 24-year-old had an excellent tournament in Qatar that attracted the attention of Blues manager Graham Potter. It seems as if the club will now lock horns with Spurs for his signature.

The former Schalke midfielder has a contract with Juventus until the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt), having joined them in the summer of 2020, initially on loan and then on a permanent deal 12 months later.

McKennie is a dynamic midfield player who generally plays the box-to-box role. He has been used as a wing-back at Juventus as well. In 16 appearances in all competitions, he scored three goals and assisted one for the Old Lady.

Chelsea could be without two senior midfielders at the start of next season, with the contracts of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho expiring in the summer, with no agreement on an extension yet. The former is close to joining Barcelona as per the reports too. His injury issues don’t seem to subside, which is the main problem.

Irrespective of that, the Blues have lacked a dynamic presence in their midfield this season. McKennie can add fresh verve, pace and running power from that position. He is a quality player on the ball as well and has an eye for goal.

More Chelsea News:

So, we should do everything to make sure the 24-year-old becomes our player in the coming transfer windows. The worst would be seeing him sign for Spurs to be honest.
