Chelsea open talks to sign 25-year-old Liga MX forward

Chelsea have opened talks to sign Mexican international Alexis Vega

As per the report of Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, via MedioTiempo (h/t Football.London), Chelsea directors have begun talks with the agent of Mexican international and Chivas (Deportivo Guadalajara) forward Alexis Vega.

Vega was part of the Mexican side that bowed out of the World Cup in the group stage. He has his club contract expiring in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt) and his suitors could be encouraged to make a move with each passing month he doesn’t renew his deal.

Vega’s father, Ernesto Vega, has revealed that talks have already begun with various European clubs for a possible transfer in the upcoming transfer windows.

The 25-year-old scored three goals and assisted four in 17 Liga MX appearances this season. He is a versatile player who can play across any position in the forward line.

Chelsea have lacked quality and a final product from their forward line this season. In the first half of the league campaign, the Blues scored only 17 goals in 14 games. That sort of average is generally boasted by a team in the latter half of the table. Graham Potter’s men are currently eighth anyway, two points ahead of 11th-placed Crystal Palace.

So, it is pretty straightforward what this squad needs going forward – goals from their forward line. Vega can play as a centre-forward and a winger. He possesses good pace, can dribble past defenders in tight spaces, is physically strong and can finish the chances well.

But, his numbers suggest that he has not been prolific of late. He did not score or assist a goal in three World Cup games as well, although Mexico were horrendous to watch in two of those games.

So, irrespective of his overall qualities, is it worth adding another player who we may not be sure of in terms of adding numbers to the goals and assists tally? Probably not. But, Potter and his men would know better.
