A View From The Bridge

“If I had the chance”- Chelsea defender makes clear admission about desire to play for Barcelona

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has expressed his desire to play for Barcelona

Speaking on Catalunya Radio (h/t Metro), Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has expressed his desire and admits he would love to play for Barcelona one day.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion player, who arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer for a whopping fee of £63m, has yet to settle into new surroundings.

The 24-year-old is a product of the Barcelona academy before he moved to Getafe, followed by a switch to Brighton in August 2021.

Here’s what he said regarding his desire to return to Catalonia one day (h/t Metro):

“I didn’t get the chance to really play for Barcelona and I’ve always been gutted about that. In the end, if I had the chance in future, I would value it, it would be very nice.”

Cucurella is a marauding fullback by trade who can play as a wing-back or as a left-sided centre-back in a three-man central defence. He did apparently come as a backup for Ben Chilwell, but the latter has struggled with injuries and failure to return to rhythm since the major setback he was dealt with in the middle of last season.

Cucurella, on the other hand, is yet to really stamp his authority in a Chelsea shirt and repeat all the good things he did in a season with Brighton.

Although the comments are not called for, especially when you have just joined a new club, it is not a harmonious quote where he sounded desperate.

If the 24-year-old wants to play for Barcelona, he might well start stitching performances in at Chelsea first anyway. He is working under a manager Graham Potter who brought him to England in the first place. So, the comfort of understanding what the boss wants from him must be there.

After a horror last few games before the World Cup break, the Blues and Cucurella would be hoping to start well when the league season resumes on 27th December with a game against Bournemouth at the Bridge. We could do by seeing more of the Spaniard first before getting angry at his Barcelona comments.

More Chelsea News:

It would, however, be a shame to lose another Spanish left-back to Barcelona – with Marcos Alonso leaving us this summer to join the Catalan giants. It would also be a moral win for the club that beat us to Jules Kounde and Raphinha this year, while signing Alonso and Andreas Christensen as free agents.
