Transfer News: Teddy Sheringham has advised Chelsea boss Graham Potter to not sign superstar Cristiano Ronaldo
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has advised Chelsea boss Graham Potter to not sign Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo.
The former Real Madrid forward was released from his United contract earlier this week and is currently a free agent. The Blues have been rumoured to be interested in him, something they were believed to be in the summer too.
However, then coach Thomas Tuchel was not in favour of signing the forward. Such hesitancy from the then Blues boss made the club shift their focus on other targets.
Now, former Spurs striker Sheringham has advised Potter to follow suit and not bring in the 37-year-old. Speaking to Boyle Sports Football Betting (h/t Football. London), the former striker shared his opinion.
“I don’t think Ronaldo is a good move for Graham Potter at all. Not so early in his Chelsea career to be dictated to who comes in. He obviously wants to have a full say on what happens at the club, and that would send out the wrong message straight away. Football surprises you every day, and you don’t know what could happen next, so who knows?”
It would be wise for the gaffer to avoid the former Madrid and United forward. While his goal-scoring abilities are a striker’s dream, his ego could be a problem for Potter, something similar to that which happened with Erik ten Hag.
Also, the forward does not react well to being benched for games which everyone witnessed during his time at United. Should Potter also bench him for some reasons, who is to say that the player won’t again cause headaches with his shenanigans on the sideline.
Moreover, the forward is 37 and is way past his prime. The Blues would be wise to rather invest their time and money on a young forward who could also be a long-term solution for them up front.

Ronaldo is in Qatar currently and scored in his side’s 3-2 win over Ghana for their opening game. Decent performance there could entice the Blues to make a move for him. While it is likely to be a success from a marketing point of view, the same cannot be said about him on the pitch.
