Transfer News: Chelsea retain interest in signing Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo in January

According to a report in Metro, Chelsea ‘remain interested’ in signing Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo in January. The Blues were linked with a move for the forward even in the summer.

Co-owner Todd Boehly was very much interested in landing the 37-year-old in the summer. It was believed that the American wanted to make the Portuguese international his marquee signing of the summer.

However, then coach Thomas Tuchel disagreed with the transfer and the Blues shifted their focus on other targets. The former Real Madrid man himself wanted to leave United in the summer but to no avail.

But things have now changed at the west London club. Tuchel is no longer the manager and current manager Graham Potter may be inclined to bring in the five-time Ballon D’or winner to Stamford Bridge.

While his goal-scoring records have ridiculous numbers in them, his recent form could be a hindrance. The Portuguese international has struggled for both game-time and in front of the goal, despite being United’s top scorer last season.

Ronaldo has featured 14 times for his side this season in all competitions, starting in only eight of them. The 37-year-old also has managed to score only three goals so far. It would appear that age has finally caught up with the superstar.

To bring in such an out-of-form player would not make much sense. Chelsea also have two strikers in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Armando Broja, with Kai Havertz also capable of playing as a centre-forward. One could say that the department is sorted and the Blues would be wise to focus on other areas of the roster.

More Chelsea News:

It remains to be seen if the west London club do make any offer for the 37-year-old in January. While the economic value that the forward will bring in will no doubt help to increase the coffers of the club, Potter would have to be sure if he wants to deal with the ego of the player that will also come along.
