Chelsea eye Jordan Pickford as an upgrade to both Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga
Chelsea are believed to be eyeing Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as an upgrade to both Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga. This is according to The Sun (h/t Metro).
Mendy and Arrizabalaga have been competing against each other for the number position at Stamford Bridge. However, both the keepers have failed to convince either of Graham Potter or the new Todd Boehly regime.
Apart from Pickford, the Blues are also believed to be linked with Brighton & Hove’s number one Robert Sanchez. It is clear that the club is looking to get in a new keeper.
Pickford has been the first choice for Everton since making a move from Sunderland in 2017. He has also since then established himself as the preferred choice for Gareth Southgate for the England national team.
While the Englishman’s form for his club has been questionable at times, he has been a reliable keeper for his country. The 28-year-old has played in 14 league games for the Toffees this season, keeping three clean sheets in the process.
It is surprising to see the Blues look for a new keeper. While Mendy has struggled for form this season, Kepa has been phenomenal for us. The Spaniard looked to have found his form back before he was sidelined due to injury.
But it still looks like the Blues want to bring in a new keeper. Pickford would make a fine target as the 28-year-old is hugely experienced in the Premier League. He sees his current contract expire in 2024, although talks over a new deal with the Toffees are ongoing.

Pickford is likely to be number one for the Three Lions this year in Qatar. A decent performance there could make the Blues to make an offer for him in January. With Everton fighting to survive relegation this season, whether they allow their number one to leave for a rival club remains to be seen.
