Transfer News: Barcelona are willing to sell Chelsea target Memphis Depay for just £4 million
According to Spanish paper AS (h/t The Sun), Barcelona are willing to sell striker Memphis Depay for just £4 million after the World Cup. Chelsea have been linked with a move for the attacker.
The Dutchman almost left the Catalonia club this summer, only for a transfer move to fall through. The 28-year-old, who joined the club in 2021 has fallen down the pecking order after the arrival of Robert Lewandowski.
Injuries too have played their part, with The Netherlands international only featuring in three games so far for the Spanish giants in all competitions. Now, Barcelona are eager to take the player off their books.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for the former Manchester United striker, with Graham Potter eager to add more firepower to his attack. Should he make a move, he will join former teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who made the same switch this summer.
The Blues have been poor in front of goal this season. The west London club sit eighth on the table, having only scored 17 goals in 14 league games. This is the lowest number for a team in the top 10 so far this season.
While Depay has prior Premier League experience, things were not so good for him then. The 28-year-old played in 53 games for the Red Devils in all competitions, scoring only seven goals in the process.
Although he has had success outside England, it could be a gamble for Potter to bring in an attacker that struggled in the Premier League. Despite his recent injuries, he was included in the World Cup squad for The Netherlands this year.
Depay came off the bench during his side’s 2-0 win over Senegal in their opening group-stage game. The 28-year-old will hope to perform well in the tournament to gain the attention of suitors in January.
