Tony Cascarino tells Chelsea to get a striker better than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang next summer

Speaking on Talksport Radio (h/t Metro), former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has told the club to for an option better than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang next summer.

The Blues signed Aubameyang on the deadline day of the summer window when Thomas Tuchel was in charge. Since then, we have seen a change in manager, with Graham Potter taking over and not playing the 33-year-old in every game due to squad rotation reasons.

Cascarino believes the former Arsenal striker will be a short-term option for Chelsea and expects the club to sign a better player for that position next summer.

Here’s what the former Republic of Ireland marksman said (h/t Metro):

“I think what will happen is what happened to him at Barcelona. They brought him to the club, got a big signing, then realised quite quickly they need to move away to a better striker. I think Chelsea will have to do that as a football club. They’ll come away from Aubameyang by the end of the season and they’ll look for an alternative without a doubt.”

Aubameyang has made 10 appearances so far for Chelsea, scoring three goals. He last scored a goal against AC Milan on October 11 at San Siro in a 2-0 Blues win. He did not start two of the last three league games, which can be understandable if the team has other lethal goal-scoring options. But, that is not the case.

So, it kind of begs the question as to why Potter is rotating the only genuine goal threat he has in the squad. With what we saw of Aubameyang in the latter half of last season at Barcelona, he certainly hasn’t slowed down and looks quality every time he starts.

Maybe the manager does not fancy him or is trying to over-protect him for the big games. If the latter is the reason, it would not help the 33-year-old in creating bonds with the players and understanding what sort of passes they play, so that he can make runs accordingly.

More Chelsea News:

If the former is the reason, then as Cascarino said, the club would look for a better option next summer. Age-wise, it is arguable that Chelsea would require long-term options in that department. But quality-wise, Aubameyang is right up there with the best strikers in Europe. He could do justice to that tag by finding the back of the net more often.
