A View From The Bridge

“Playing so poorly”- Graham Potter’s Blues labelled ‘worst Chelsea team’ in 10 years

Tony Cascarino has labelled the current Chelsea side as the worst in 10 years

Speaking to Talksport Radio (h/t Express), former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has labelled the current Blues side as the worst the club has seen in 10 years.

This is after Graham Potter’s men lost against Newcastle United, making it three losses in a row in the Premier League. They haven’t won a league game in five now, leaving them eight points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur going into the World Cup break.

Cascarino talked about how he had reservations about Chelsea appointing Potter because of how less Brighton and Hove Albion scored under him.

Here’s what the former Republic of Ireland international said (h/t Express):

“They’ve lost their way slightly. They don’t look like scoring goals in the centre-forward position, but I can’t believe how many players are playing so poorly for Chelsea.”

“That is what’s really surprising. What I’m watching now is probably the worst Chelsea team that they’ve had over the last 10 years because I really don’t know what they’re about.”

Although on current form this team deserves the criticism it is getting from all corners, there are 24 league games still to be played after the World Cup break. Champions League last-16 tie against Borussia Dortmund also awaits.

So, anything can happen, especially in a season as unique as this. Potter was appointed in September and was thrown into an intense schedule of games. With him not having pre-season with the players and then not getting time on the training pitch due to the volume of games, judging his Chelsea side at the moment would be unfair to him.

That being said, the manager would have to find a way how the team can start scoring goals which would put opposition teams under pressure. At the moment, teams think one goal is enough to get a point or all three against the Blues.

Summer signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hasn’t looked up to the races, while Armando Broja and Kai Havertz have lacked the cutting edge.

Hence, not just the tactical side, Potter would be looking to sign players in the coming transfer windows to add more quality and goals to this team.
