According to Football.London, as quoted by Tribal Football, Brazil captain Thiago Silva is determined to prove the doubters wrong in the World Cup after his Chelsea move was questioned.
The 38-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge from Paris-Saint Germain in 2020 summer and has been one of the key figures in the Blues back-line since. Few months away from turning 36 at the time, it was natural for people to wonder if he could still hack at it the very top.
Silva was a big part of the team that won the Champions League in 2021, even though he picked up an injury in the first half of the final against Manchester City.
Here’s what the veteran said ahead of the World Cup game, regarding his Chelsea move and aiming to silence the doubters (h/t Football.London):
“It was a tough time when I left PSG. Although I was sure my qualities were intact, I know that others doubted me and whether the decision to switch to Chelsea was the right one. It culminated in us winning the Champions League in 2021. It was the perfect way to disprove people who doubted.”
Brazil are one of the favourites to lift the World Cup for the sixth time in their illustrious history. If they are to go all the way, Silva would play a major part by leading the team from the back. His presence and quality in central defence are unmatched by anything Tite’s men can offer in that department.
With Marquinhos alongside him, Casemiro shielding the back-line and Alisson, one of the best goalkeepers in the world protecting the goal, Brazil do have one of the best back-lines in the tournament.
Don’t think many at Chelsea would question the move Silva made in 2020. He has been a Rolls-Royce of a defender for the Blues who has probably not lowered his performance levels at all in the last two years.
It is a shame that he is getting old now and may not go on forever. His contract at Stamford Bridge also expires at the end of this season (Transfermarkt). It would be interesting to see whether he signs another one-year extension or call it time.
Irrespective of the decision, Thiago Silva would be a Chelsea legend who would have given us three excellent seasons at the twilight of his career. At the World Cup, he has started with the captain’s armband in both his team’s group games so far in what could be his last appearance in the competition given his age.
