Speaking on the Lions’ Den in England YouTube channel (h/t Football.London), Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling revealed how good star player Mason Mount was in the latter’s first England training with the senior team.
Mount, who has five goals and five assists in 32 appearances for the Three Lions, was called up to the national team squad in October 2018, months after Gareth Southgate’s men had an excellent World Cup in Russia where they finished fourth.
Although the Chelsea academy product did not earn his first England cap till September 2019 against Bulgaria, Sterling revealed how good he was in his opening few training sessions with the senior team.
Here’s what the 27-year-old said about Mount and his training performance (h/t Football.London):
“Best training performance I’ve seen to this day. Every time we speak with him after the game or something, we say to him it was the best training performance.
“He joined up with the seniors, he came up from the Under-21s and just came, from Derby at the time, and I’m not exaggerating, left foot, right foot, dribbling, chopping. It was the best training performance. It was the best training performance I’ve seen to this day. I haven’t seen anything that’s topped that.
“He’s just come into our training session, I’m here, it was the first camp after we came back from the Russia World Cup and he’s come up with something incredible. It was top, top.”
Mount has been one of the best players at Chelsea in the last two years. However, his form going into the World Cup was patchy, to say the least. The 23-year-old had two goals and six assists in 21 appearances in all competitions for the Blues before the mid-season tournament break.
But, we all know how good the former Derby County loanee is. He has graduated from the academy and become one of the elite stars of Chelsea and England.
We would hope that Mount has a great World Cup, where he takes his country to the latter stages of the tournament. That would help him grow in confidence and stature as a player which will be helpful when he returns to play for the Chelsea team in the second half of this season.
The Blues hierarchy would also be hoping to get the player to sign the new contract. The 23-year-old’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2023 and the negotiations on an extension have dragged since the summer (Guardian).
Now, any talk will be done after the World Cup, with Liverpool and Juventus circling if discussions don’t end up well. We want Mount to stay here as long as possible and see him shine in a Chelsea shirt for years to come.
