Speaking in the post-match press conference as quoted by Football. London, Chelsea boss Graham Potter has claimed that it does not look good for the English star Ben Chilwell with the talented left-back picking up a hamstring injury in the game against Dinamo Zagreb last night.
Chelsea managed to beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 in the Champions League last night with goals from Raheem Sterling and Denis Zakaria helping Graham Potter’s side get the result they wanted and emerge out of the group as the leaders and progress to the round of 16.
It was a solid performance from the Blues on the night who looked largely comfortable. Their summer signing Raheem Sterling really lit it up with his performance and forgotten man Zakaria showed what Chelsea were missing in his first start for the club.
However, not everything that panned out on the night went according to plan with the injury to Ben Chilwell really spoiling Chelsea’s night. It’s a cruel twist of fate for a player who was out injured for much of last season with an ACL injury.
Chilwell would have expected to be on the flight to Qatar as he looked to compete with Man United star Luke Shaw for the starting berth in Gareth Southgate’s team. However, it looks like all these plans are set to change with this new injury to the player.
Speaking about Chilwell and his injury, Graham Potter did not offer much positive news and admitted that it does not look good for the player.
“It’s a blow for us on an otherwise positive evening. To see him pull up like that, it’s not a great sight. So fingers crossed when we get it scanned it isn’t too bad. It can be not as severe but we have to cross our fingers at the moment. But clearly, we’re disappointed.”
Whilst England won’t be having much of an issue with Luke Shaw also superb in that role, it will be a big miss for Ben Chilwell. He would have expected to be at the World Cup and if he is ruled out, it will be a huge blow for the Chelsea defender.
We still don’t know if Chilwell will be ruled out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He will hope that is not the case but it remains to be seen what happens with the 25-year-old and how his injury pans out.
