Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher defends Chelsea star Mason Mount following criticism
Speaking on Sky Sports World Cup Preview Show (h/t Football.London), Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has leapt on the defence of Chelsea star Mason Mount following criticism.
Mount has been a subject of grave criticism after Chelsea’s slow start to the season that has seen them lie eighth in the table going into the World Cup break.
If we look at the numbers though, the 23-year-old has two goals and six assists in 20 appearances in the league and Champions League. While those are not ground-breaking returns, they can be counted as good considering how bad the Blues have been this season, especially going forward.
Talking about Mount and how he is an important player for any team, here’s Carragher (h/t Football.London):
“People question Mason Mount possibly because he’s not as easy on the eye as other players. But every manager picks him, Chelsea or England, he’s a clever footballer who understands the other side of the game and I think he can do a job and make sure England don’t get counter-attacked on.”
Carragher is not wrong because Mount has been one of Chelsea’s best players in the last two years. Since coming back from a loan spell at Derby County in 2018/19, the Englishman has developed his game to an elite level.
The 23-year-old’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). Co-owner Todd Boehly is keen on tying him down for the future, but the talks have stalled in the last few weeks. But, the discussions will resume after the World Cup.
Mason Mount has the potential to be an icon at Chelsea for the next decade. He is a good human being as well, which could lead to him being in contention to succeed Cesar Azpilicueta as the club captain in the future.
While criticism is part of the game and every player goes through that especially when the expectations rise from some of them, Mount has not been as bad as some people would suggest.

The issue is that Chelsea were not playing well in the last few weeks, hence even top players like Mount and Thiago Silva have looked average. It is now up to the manager Graham Potter to get things right for the second half of the season.
