Speaking in the post-match press conference as quoted by Football. London, Chelsea boss Graham Potter has admitted that English defender Ben Chilwell is devastated by the fact that he is set to miss the World Cup and hopes that he gets fit again soon.
It was confirmed earlier this week that Chilwell will miss the trip to Qatar after he suffered a hamstring problem midweek against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. It comes as a crucial blow for a player who has had a cruel fate with injuries in recent seasons.
Chilwell missed almost the entire last campaign due to an ACL injury. He has been very cautiously used ever since he came back from his injury. Despite managing his workload rather well, the Blues will be devastated that the English star is on the sidelines again.
The 25-year-old will obviously be devastated by the heartbreak of not being able to go to the World Cup but there is no doubt that Chilwell will come back stronger than ever. He is expected to be available for Chelsea after the mid-season break if everything about his recovery goes well.
In Chilwell’s absence, England are likely to continue persisting with Luke Shaw and that is not a bad thing. The Manchester United star is in pretty good form and Gareth Southgate is likely to make him his first-choice left-back for the World Cup.
However, the English manager needs to identify someone as a backup to the Chelsea defender. It is still not clear as to who they have identified as the replacement for Chilwell in the squad but Southgate has the decision to make when he announces the final squad this weekend.
Speaking about the player and how he is doing, Graham Potter admitted that Chilwell was devastated and revealed that Chelsea will do all it takes to get him fit.
“He’s disappointed as you can imagine. It’s a blow to him. He is going to miss the World Cup which is bad news for any player. There is no timescale, we just have to help him get fit, help him be strong, and be ready for when he is right. It is blow and we’ve tried to manage Ben and the minutes he has had”
It remains to be seen how long it takes for Ben Chilwell to make the return to training. Let’s hope it is soon and let’s hope he can remain fit. It may not be now, but Chilwell will definitely have his moment under the sun and it is only a matter of time.
